2008 is the Year of the RAT -- the first sign of the Chinese zodiac. If you were born in the year of the rat, you are smart, magnetic, well-liked, affable, quick-witted, surreptitious, selfish, protective and can be calculating. The rat is a lover of money and a hater of waste and idleness.
To celebrate the Chinese New Year which falls on February 7th of this year, I participated in an altered drink coaster swap and we were requested to use the RAT as our theme. The coasters were compressed paperboard, printed on one side with a colored image on the reverse. Thus, I painted the entire coaster with black gesso to cover the photo and the printed words. I found a packet of canvas paper for inkjet printers at my local craft store and printed the image of an old chinese coin on the canvas and cut it out to use on the back of my coaster, using a faux coin for the center.
For the front, I wanted a rat that would look like it was hiding in bamboo; however, that was not to be so my "mouse" image is a stand-in for a rat and, fortunately, I had some charms for added embellishment along with a computer generated Kanji symbol.
